French police are investigating claims a year-old Australian woman was raped by five men in Paris, days before the city is set to host the Olympic Games.
The Paris prosecutor's office confirmed officers were investigating the charge of gang rape, "likely to have been committed on the night of July 19 to 20, ".
Reports of the alleged assault in the early hours of Saturday morning in the French capital's famous Montmartre party precinct, began circulating in French media on Monday. A spokesperson for the police union told the ABC he was the source of those reports and confirmed "a young, distressed-looking Australian woman, years-old, fled into a kebab shop at around 5am" on Boulevard de Clichy.
The police union spokesperson claimed the woman did not speak French and did not provide much information about when and where the incident occurred. The police union spokesperson claimed the woman had told investigators she'd been raped by five men.
The police union spokesperson also claimed the woman was taken to a local hospital by first responders. Asked about the alleged assault, Team Australia chef de mission Anna Meares said "our hearts go out to the woman involved and we hope she's being cared for and supported in the trauma that she's experienced".
