This paper explores the multifaceted perspectives on prostitution in Paris during the early 20th century, particularly emphasizing the experiences of various artists and performers, including Umberto Boccioni and Claude Modjesko, within the context of a burgeoning nightlife and sexual culture.
It examines the interplay between registered and clandestine sex work, highlighting the implications of regulatory systems, the influence of major cultural events like the Exposition Universelle, and the diverse sexual identities that found expression in the vibrant cabaret scene of Montmartre. Ultimately, the work sheds light on the contrasting realities of visibility and marginalization faced by sex workers and their representation in art and society.

In this paper, we use qualitative and quantitative data to explain the increasing number of "clandestine" street prostitutes in Paris during The Belle Epoque. We first describe the economics of street prostitution at the time: street prostitutes were young, unskilled and well-paid; they tended to work with pimps that were from the same area and clustered in neighborhoods where they could compete with regulated brothels. Street prostitutes not only generated profits for themselves but also for a whole bunch of actors, thereby switching the whole local economy to this industry, at the expense of the formal economy.

After the establishment of foreign concessions placed Shanghai under semi-colonial control, French and Chinese culture combined in this area of the city to create a unique urban landscape that was unlike anywhere else in the world. This differentiated prostitution in the French Concession from prostitution in other parts of Shanghai.
