I was a bagger at a grocery store when I was a teenager. Our state had a recycling law where we had to accept empty bottles and cans back, and part of my job was counting and sorting them in the back. The shopping carts got really dirty and sticky because they were used to carry the recyclables into the store a lot.
A customer is angry with me because I have called them due to being behind on their bill. The futility of eradicating a job that relies on the existence of poor people by making me poor escaped them. I work in a classic fish-and-chips shop on the beachfront of a touristy town in south England. I am serving a couple who sound American. I smile and nod, and off they go. I work for U-Haul. I saw this guy pull into our lot individual lot, not part of a plaza , drive underneath a giant U-Haul sign, drive past dozens of white U-Haul trucks and vans, park next to a storage building that has giant letters spelling out U-Haul, enter the showroom and walk up to me, passing hundreds of boxes labeled U-Haul, and address me at the counter, wearing a U-Haul general manager shirt.
He immediately swings back his phone, looks at me, looks around, looks at me, looks at my nametag, looks around yet again as if hoping everything changed since the first time he looked around, and then growls. I used to work in a supermarket, but I left the week before. I still occasionally pop in to do my own shopping, which I am doing when one of the regular customers walks over to me and does that annoying little cough designed to get your attention instead of using words.
Be lazy! I know your name and I will be talking to your manager about this! I shrug and continue my shopping.
