A brothel hidden in the shadow of Birmingham's New Street Station has been shut down by police for a second time. Resthouse Massage has been operating an "illegal sex establishment", steps away from city centre restaurants and the famous Electric Cinema. West Midlands Police said owners were told to shut down in Autumn last year when officers discovered the premises in Station Street were being used as a brothel.
It was running under the guise of a massage parlour and using a different name back then, said the force. But after an initial closure, it sneakily opened up again, trying to foil officers and continue with its 'sex for sale' antics.
When police heard the brothel was back, this time as Resthouse Massage, in the same building, officers combined forces with Birmingham City Council and Women's Aid to get the brothel shut down again. And this time they went through the courts. The doorway of the brothel, pictured, is a small unassuming entrance within the heart of the city where thousands of commuters, visitors and shoppers pass by most days.
A West Midlands Police spokesperson said: "The court order means the premises must remain closed for the next three months. And we'll monitor them to ensure they do. Take our poll: Would you consider hiring a private investigator to find out if your partner is cheating on you? Sadly we know there are women who are exploited and forced into the sex industry. Police said that women involved in this trade can be the victims of organised crime.
The force added that it has a range of "proactive action" to target offenders involved with organised crime. Women's Aid was involved as it has schemes to safeguard those who were being exploited to work at the brothel. Beyond the Streets works with women involved in the UK sex industry. They work to see women safe from coercion, violence and abuse.
