My mother came to the rescue, telling her I needed the break, and she agreed to go to the family Christmas without me. The hotel we stayed in was five-star — and my Miami Christmas Day was spent on a beach in a tiny nearby town. We ate seafood, drank Champagne and danced on the beach at a bar called Aruba — both of us wearing shorts because the weather was glorious.
We spent the next five years together — and he asked me to marry him. I said no. To friends, male and female. To my sister. But especially to Tim Vincent — remember him, from Blue Peter?
