The first, which this post covers, will talk about Oma; how her creators were affected by various influences and how her character developed. In the second I will give a more subjective view in explaining where I think the visual aspects of her character came from and why I have a personal interest in the her.
To begin, let us begin at the beginning and introduce my understanding of Oma My friend Lindsey, a Stargate and Farscape fan could unravel the complexities of the how and why of plot lines and kept me in touch when I missed episodes. After real life arrived and I had my own Kelowna thankfully without the naquaria, but only just I sort of lost contact with her so I lost interest in Stargate.
I didn't get to know how Oma was further involved with Daniel, although I did realise something pretty bad had happened because the ascension stuff was all over the internet. I only came back to watch the show, and put my feet tentatively in the water of fandom, this time last year. I had also done a crash course in Comparative Mythology between then and now, learnt how to read hieroglyphs and became a fan of Joseph Campbell and Jung.
I realised that what I had been reading was actually very useful when watching the show So, when I was thinking about what I should write in this meta I was watching The Quest and happened to hear what Merlin said about Oma. His words were that she concerned herself with the individual. When I thought about that I realised that he was right, and in fact all the members of SG1 personally got an alien or alien race who concerned them selves directly with a character.
