Garden Retreat Spa practices a combination of Shiatsu and Swedish massage. In Shiatsu massage pressure is applied with thumbs, fingers and palms to the same energy meridians as acupressure and incorporates stretching, rolling, kneading with the hands and thumbs. Swedish massage uses long flowing strokes to relax tight muscles.
The strokes are sliding or gliding, kneading, rhythmic tapping, cross fiber friction and vibration. Asian massage techniques have been in use for thousands of years all across the Orient from Korea to China, Japan and Thailand. The famous shiatsu massage can trace its roots back to Japan, Tui na to China and exceptionally strong deep tissue massage of Korea. Massage has also been practiced spanning Europe for centuries from Russia to Sweden to the Roman world of spas and hot baths of ancient history.
