Exclusive: Sony Pictures Classics has acquired worldwide rights to Blue Moon , the new film from Academy Award nominee Richard Linklater Hit Man , on which we were first to report, and which will be his next effort after all, with production commencing in Dublin, Ireland this summer.
Ethan Hawke is set to star, in his ninth collaboration with Linklater. The executive, who lived in Los Angeles for a number of years, said also he aims at bringing together European and American talent and sensibilities on projects that are personal, yet boast an international appeal.
Many of the filmmakers in business with the banner have a dual culture. Clichy, for instance, is French but previously worked for Pixar Netflix and Richard Linklater certainly make for peculiar bedfellows.
Where every other Netflix exclusive feels like it was concocted by an algorithm and designed to have maximum appeal, Linklater has been perfectly happy to direct films for a niche market these past plus years. Even at his most commercial, with a film like " School of Rock ," you get the sense the eccentric Texan auteur is making movies that speaks to his interests first and foremost.
