FedExForum renovations could last up to ten years, Memphis Mayor Paul Young told the Memphis City Council Tuesday afternoon as he set up the city's next steps in using stadium funds from the state. Breaking the funding into phases, Young said, should lead to lower costs and allow the arena to be used during the season.
It will also allow the arena to keep up with the NBA's arena standards. No vote will happen during Tuesday's full council meeting, as Young's presentation was a discussion item to give notice to councilmembers. The allocation could be approved at the next council meeting.
The tax increase, however, will be done in an ordinance and require three votes at three different council meetings to be approved. Officials have been working on funding for FedExForum renovations for years. Soccer team Memphis FC had initially hoped for some of that money to build a new stadium, but the city declined to fund that project and it ultimately led to the demise of FC, which folded last year.
