With its distinctive pink granite soils and intensely concentrated wines, Moulin-a-Vent is one of the most prized of the ten Beaujolais Cru appellations. Located between the Chenas and Fleurie, Moulin-a-Vent has hectares of vines, spread across south and south-eastern facing slopes on the Beaujolais hills.
In a geological quirk unique to Moulin-a-Vent, the soils have seams of manganese in them, which is toxic to grapes and retards growth. Vines develop lower yields and smaller bunches as a result, which increases flavour intensity. Moulin-a-Vent wines are intensely flavoured and far more tannic than wines found elsewhere in Beaujolais, with a bright garnet colour and floral, fruity aromas.
Violet and spicy cherry flavours give way to muskier earthy notes as the wine matures, with some truffle and game characters showing off the full-bodied complexity that Moulin-a-Vent wines enjoy.
