You may note that he started his wartime flying on the Fairey Battle, a single engine, 3 seat light bomber, much like a very large Hawker Hurricane.
After managing to get back to Britain after being shot down he eventually got back to operational flying, now with the Hawker Typhoon, which was beginning to come into service, a heavy well armed fighter, which probably carried more bombs than the Fairey Battle!
