Following Edward's overdose and his departure from her family, she made the decision to cut her father our of her life, choosing to tell others that he died due to his addiction. She went to Brown University where she majored in literature, there she would meet and become friends with Peach Salinger , Annika Attwater , and Lynn Lieser.
Beck immediately becomes fixated on by Joe as soon as she walks into Mooney's bookstore, and she strikes up a brief albeit flirty conversation with him about authors. At Annika's birthday dinner, Beck gifts her an expensive designer scarf, a move criticized by Peach because of her financial situation.
Peach attempts to comfort Beck's feelings of inadequacy due to her vastly different lifestyle, and loans money to Beck despite her embarrassment. Later that night, she meets with Benji Ashby. They argue because of Benji's unfaithfulness towards Beck, but they still end up hooking up. The next day, Beck has her work critiqued by Professor Leahy, and she reluctantly agrees to go out with drinks with him to further discuss her writing. Beck invites her friends to an open mic, and gets humiliated on stage while trying to read her poetry to the crowd.
