The experience was so new yet very worthy! I could not say no to an opportunity to experience and explore what that part of Papua New Guinea could look and feel like.
I come from Milne Bay Province, specifically the Trobriand Islands; this makes me more comfortable travelling on airplanes than long drives on highways. Waking up early on Friday, July 30, I felt the overwhelming excitement imagining the whole trip and how it would feel for a first timer.
Leaving 25years of my life in Port Moresby, I never had the opportunity to take a trip like this and this subjected to strict parents who were more worried of our education than adventuring. At around 10pm that Friday night, we left Kennedy Estate at 8-Mile and began our travel along the Hiritano Highway for 4 hours 30 minutes straight to reach our destination. It was a very long and smooth 3 hours ride to Bereina station; this was actually the end of a smooth sealed road. There was a number of well-built bridges that allow vehicles to pass through each village and this has brought me to discover the number of stations that PMVs normally stop to stretch and relax before travelling to the city, however, two stations in particular are nationally owned by the government were Agevairu Station and Bereina Station.
At few particular stations, the people living around that area and doing small business could boil tea or coffee and serve passengers and drivers for free to warm them up before another long drive to town.
I was told it was the longest and biggest rubber plantation in Central Province and I was amazed at how beautifully grown the plantation looked in line with where it was situated. The misty cool breeze along the mountainous road left me speechless at how beautiful the view was despite the long tiring ride.
