Each hour-long session contains a health and wellness lesson as well as exercise. Students learn about nutrition, healthy habits, healthy relationships and more. During the fitness component, students log over a mile of walking and learn different stretches and exercises they can do at home.
We learn as much from them as they learn from us. To serve even more students, SOMI worked with YAS to adapt the fitness program and make it accessible for students with more severe disabilities highly impacted by the state-mandated shutdowns. Thanks to the program, students have grown from having difficulties exiting the bus to walking laps around the gym and other physical activities.
Lehnert said parents were eager to have their children participate in the SOMIfit program. SOMIfit helps athletes become healthier and develop lifelong healthy habits, while also providing resources to athletes that they may not have regular access to. SOMIfit is available in-person and virtually for school-based settings, community settings, and individual participants.
Students participate in activities inside and outside the classroom focusing on life skills, job skills, personal care, and functional academics allowing them to reach maximum independence.
