Since you sound so unsure about driving even after five or six trips as though driving in France were totally different from driving in your own country , I think you should refrain from driving at all. Aix is not that hard. The first time in Southern France we also bypassed it because we couldn't park easily. On later trips we found parking just by driving around and someone left.
