Since the early years of cinema, filmmakers have used the silver screen to bring the horrors of war to life in a way civilians could never hope to understand. Since war films are often based on true events, showcase incredible acts of bravery, and often criticize the use of excessive violence to solve global issues, many movie buffs have a deep love for them. The genre is gritty, dark, action-packed, emotional, and often hard to digest, which makes it perfect for moviegoers who want something with substance.
Over the last century, hundreds of war movies have flooded cinemas around the world. Some are based on actual events, some are inspired by real wars but tell a fictional story, and some are completely fictional.
Not every war story makes for a good film, but there are some truly awe-inspiring and powerful war movies out there that any film buff should add to their watch list.
All Quiet on the Western Front is a title that most movie fans have probably at least heard once or twice. The original film was based on a Erich Maria Remarque novel of the same name. The film was the first of three films to adapt this novel. The most recent came out in and received incredible reviews from fans and critics.
While the modern adaptation is a fantastic watch and also worth the few hours to sit through it, any movie buff would be remiss not to see the original version.
