Three Michigan children are dead after a weekend house fire in a Detroit suburb, according to local authorities. The siblings, a year-old girl and two boys ages 15 and 12, could not escape the fire Sunday night, said Byron Turnquist, fire marshal in West Bloomfield Township. The fire broke out around 8 p. One of the siblings was able to call when the fire broke out and Turnquist said that investigators found no smoke detectors inside the home. Firefighters reportedly had to force their way inside the home when they arrived at the scene and they found no adults inside the home at the time of the fire.
Tunrquist said that the cause of the fire remains under investigation. Turnquist said that it is not known at this time why there were no adults in the house at the time and why the children were unable to get out of the house. One teen was a junior at West Bloomfield High School while the other two victims attended school outside the district, West Bloomfield school officials said in a letter to families.
Local authorities said they are urging residents to ensure they have adequate working smoke alarms in their homes, as well as making sure to replace alarms that are over years-old.
