Best pet for a studio apartment September 13, AM Subscribe I would love to have a pet, but live in a 40sqm studio apartment. What would you recommend? My first choice of a small dog is out for the moment as I'm out of the house in the week for about 10 hours a day, I'm on the 8th floor with a balcony so I think a cat isn't a great idea either. I had guinea pigs and rabbits growing up, ideas?
I'd like something I could pet so fish are out. Response by poster: Forgot to mention, if I had a hamster would it keep me awake at night? But a cat might very well harass you while you sleep. Rats are nice!
Smarter and friendlier than other rodents. If you're looking for something fluffy to pet this is probably a bad idea, but some kids I used to babysit years ago had a leopard spotted gecko who was just the coolest. She was super friendly I don't know if this is standard amongst geckos or if Lucy was just unusually chill and would happily sit still and let you stroke her gross little reptile back as long as you wanted.
Hamster or anything else in a cage with a wheel probably will keep you awake. And remember you're still going to have to go down 8 floors every time the dog needs to go out, like maybe in the middle of the night or at 5 in the morning on a Sunday. A cat is really your best choice. It won't jump off the balcony, they have the sense not to do that.
As long as you use a contained covered litter box and a high-quality litter all-crystal kind is very good you'll do fine with the space issue. I might even recommend getting a pair -- an established pair, like littermate kittens, not two randos put together. That way they would have some like-self company while you're gone all day.
